Class Description
Computer Science — Bits to Bytes is a hands-on, deep dive into the core ideas in Computer Science. Kids explore topics such as computer networks, understanding memory and storage, building circuits, and coding embedded systems and sensors. We’ll also learn about cyber security, operating systems, and cutting edge topics like AI, Large Language Models (LLM), blockchains, and the emerging field of quantum computing.
Computer science education broadly divides into learning to code and learning how computer technology works. This class focuses on the latter: the concepts, hardware, and systems that make software possible. Each monthly session concentrates on a single topic and gives students hands-on activities plus clear next steps so they can continue learning outside the classroom.
Objective
Each class focuses on one Computer Science topic. Students learn core ideas in hands-on activities and leave with resources to explore further. The course is designed to complement student’s Computer Science classes at school and to strengthen conceptual understanding for students preparing for standardized tests (e.g., GCSE).
Who Can Take the Class
Anyone can join! There are no coding requirements or other pre-requisites. This class is great for:
- Students who are curious about how computers work.
- Young coders that want to know how their code really works.
- Students taking Computer Science at school who want extra context and hands-on practice
- Students getting ready for standardized tests like the GCSE.
