Minecraft & Scratch

Class Schedule

In the Minecraft & Scratch class, kids will learn how to use Scratch to program characters in Minecraft.  Students will use all the computer programming concepts they learned in Scratch and apply it to programming in Minecraft.

Students will do the following things in the class:

  • Program a character to move.
  • Program an automated pet to follow the player.
  • Program a character to detect different types of blocks.
  • Program an automated character to search for different types of blocks, mine them, and return them to the player.
  • Continue to practice and improve their coding skills.

Who is this coding class for?

  • Children 7-10 & 10-12 years old
  • Completed at least Scratch Beginner II (or by approval)
  • Laptops and hardware devices provided

Learning Outcomes

  • Learn how to use Scratch to program characters in Minecraft.
  • Continue to develop core coding skills.
  • Cultivate and Develop problem-solving and critical logic skills.
  • Appreciation of the application of Science and Mathematics in coding.

Class Structure

  • Course Duration: 6 hours

Python Perfect Lab

The Python Perfect Lab is designed for students to practice and improve their coding skills.  Students work on increasingly challenging coding problems, with the help and guidance of a Coding Lab instructor.

Students can attend the Python Perfect classes while they are currently taking one of the other Python classes, such as Python Beginner 101 or 102, or they can take classes in between Python Beginner 101, 102, or 103.  The classes do not have to be taken in order.  


Who is this for?

Students 10-12 & 13-17 years old

At least Currently taking Python 101

Weekends: 2 hours

Open Tinkering Lab

The Open Tinkering Lab is a supervised intermediate coding lab that is designed for kids to work on their own projects.   An instructor is present in the lab to mentor and supervise students.

If students don’t have their own projects to work on, teachers will help students come up with new ideas for projects to work on.

Who is this for?

Children 7-9 years old

STEM Lab: Scratch (AGE 10-12)

STEM Lab: Scratch coding classes are intermediate level coding classes that teach new coding ideas using a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Art) area of focus, such as LEGO robotics, game physics, game design, creative writing, Minecraft, and more.  Kids continue to develop new coding skills and hone existing skills all while exploring a new subject.  This allows kids to apply their coding skills to real, concrete problems, while doing something they enjoy!  Learn something new! And have fun!

mBot Robotics & Scratch

Camp Schedule

In the Tinker Garage mBot Robotics & Scratch camp, kids spend all their time programming mBot  robots using mBot’s version of Scratch called MakeBlock.

In this course, students will learn about robotics and program mBots .

Who is this coding class for?

  • Children 6-12 & 12-17 years old
  • Completed at least Scratch Beginner II (or by approval)
  • No experience with robotics required
  • Laptops and hardware devices provided

Learning Outcomes

  • Learn how to use Scratch to program external hardware devices (mBots).
  • Continue to develop core coding skills.
  • Cultivate and Develop problem-solving and critical logic skills.
  • Appreciation of the application of Science and Mathematics in coding.

Biology & Scratch

Camp Schedule

In the Tinker Garage Biology & Scratch camp, kids spend all their time coding Scratch projects related to Biology.

In this course, students will learn about the basics of Biology (cell structure, cell division, genetics, and the immune system) and learn how to code (model) it in Scratch.  We’ll use Scratch to create simple programs to illustrate and explain biology.  And then kids will apply the biology they learned in Scratch games and animations.


Learning Outcomes

  • Learn how to use Scratch to model Biology.
  • Learn the basics of Biology.
  • Continue to develop core coding skills.
  • Cultivate and Develop problem-solving and critical logic skills.

LEGO Robotics & Scratch

Camp Schedule

In the Tinker Garage LEGO Robotics & Scratch camp, kids spend all their time programming LEGO Wedo robots using Scratch.   LEGO WeDo is a popular educational robotics kit for kids.

In this course, students will learn about robotics, build LEGO robots, and most importantly learn how to  write Scratch programs to control the robots.  Their Scratch programs will interact with the real world using the LEGO WeDo motor, motion sensor, and tilt sensor.  Kids will also learn how to use the LEGO sensors to provide feedback to their Scratch programs, enabling things like interactive game controllers, motion alarms, and Scratch games that intersect with the real world.

Who is this coding class for?

  • Children 6-12 & 12-17 years old
  • Completed at least Scratch Beginner II (or by approval)
